RENDERING MEANING:
WHAT
An analogue typographic display consisting of 210 paper ‘sails’ that are rotated by small motors to reveal a black or white side. Together they form a word or expression.
HOW
Pairs of synonyms appear in succession, highlighting slight nuances in meaning. ‘Angst’ for example, implies a general and existential emotional turmoil, while ‘fear’ describes an emotion caused by a perceived threat.
WHY
Constantly in motion, this public installation has a mesmerising quality. The paper has a physicality and sound that is more engaging than a screen. It introduces a new and unfamiliar format for presenting typography.
QUOTE
The display emphasises the importance of subtle nuances inherent in language.
