ACCORDING TO THE GRAIN

WHAT
Instead of hiding its inner self under an industrially polished outer layer, this furniture collection proudly exhibits what it’s made of: wood!

WHY
The surface of many products does not show the material that lies underneath. Modern techniques can make plastic look like steel, glass or solid wood. This dishonesty creates an emotional distance between us and our objects, says Sho Ota. With this project he wants to revive our appreciation of genuine materiality.

HOW
Instead of working the wood until it is smooth and uniform, he highlights the natural grains and knots — even exaggerating them with carved out patterns and extensions. Newly grown branches demonstrate what these knots once were. True tactility returns, reminding us of the origins of our furniture.

QUOTE
Many surfaces have become a disguise.
