Graduate Martijn van Strien: I prefer making coffee

Alissa sings 'I saw design'

In the last episode, EMMA concludes with some comments on the Milan Design Week by some famous and less famous people. Tracy Metz thinks it was a very inspiring week. One of the highlights for her was Maarten Baas's circus show since it is such a great commentary on the crazy world of design that Milan is.Creative director Thomas Widdershoven looks back on a week full of shows, taxis and talks. Tiring, but inspiring. Tracy Metz adds to this that she missed the story behind the work in the exhibition. She pleas for more explanations in the show.

Martijn van Strien's project Dystopian Brutalist is on the cover of the Self Unself paper that is handed out at the show. But Martijn doesn't seem to be very impressed about that. He confesses he doesn't really like designers. He prefers making coffee behind the bar.

Who is Rosanna Orlandi and why is she the buzz?

Reporter Olle goes down to Rosanna's place to find out who she is and why she is such a buzz here in Milan. She seems to have a special kind of magic…we learn that she likes espresso, and finds soccer boring. Danielle and Hilde went to see Maarten Baas's circus and interviewed him, but unfortunately a bag was stolen at the show, with the recorder in it, including the interview! This is why Danielle tells the story of Maarten to the EMMA diary. Maarten was not making a statement, he said. Milan is a show, no more and no less.

In this episode, listen to what Arne Hendriks has to say about the incredible shrinking man. Why should we become smaller?

Emma Radio: SHOW 4 - Thursday April 10, 2014

EMMA goes where the small fishes are

Hella Jongerius and Vitra can afford ten thousands to rent a space in the Salone del Mobile, but not everyone can! In Salone Satellite there is room for startups, upcoming talents and smaller education institutes. The EMMA reporters went there to ask: do you design to sell? And surprisingly, they seem to do so. How do they stand out between all these designers? Or, do they even want to? Olle even dares to ask about the cost of exhibiting…

The design therapist asks a former design students if she owns any design objects. Does she walk the talk? The things you use the most are usually the best designs. But often you don't know who designed them. Do we know for example who invented the paperclip?

And don't miss Alissa's blues. She sings like an angel!

Emma Radio: SHOW 3 - Wednesday April 9, 2014

Li Edelkoort on anarchy and shoes

When the reporters spotted Li Edelkoort, they immediately pushed the record button. What does she think of the show? There is talent, says Li Edelkoort. The curators chose strong pieces. When she first brought Design Academy to Milan in 1999, design had to be more humble.

The design therapist asked visitors about their daily design problems and challenges. Today: "I want to use the shower as a place, even if it is without windows, and even it is not a spa, where I can relax and feel like I'm in a wellness centre."

Reporter Olle talks more with Li. He is curious about her take on the development of the academy. "It went through a few dips, but it still presents itself in a powerful way. The departments are very strong and they have their own will. Even when the 3rd floor fucks up, it still works. That is the power of the system."

And the final question: what kind of shoes does Li recommend? Running shoes or sandals, according to Li. Let's test on other visitors. Yes, they all wish they had brought comfortable shoes intend of designerly shoes...

Emma radio: SHOW 2 - Tuesday April 8, 2014

Secrets, Jet Bussemaker and Mouth Gymnastics in Episode #2

Everyone has a secret. The Secret Cookie Factory helps you to finally set yourself free from this burden and let your secret fly! Anonymously, of course. Reporter Alissa goes through the process and at the same time interviews these second year students. Which secret does Alissa get in her cookie?

Our minister Jet Bussemaker was chased by the EMMA reporters. She likes students because they give her energy. Meeting students is fun, says our minister of education, culture and science. She especially mentioned the project of graduate Inge Kuipers, Tea Set Touch.

In the daily 'Dear Diary' item. This time Olle tells his crazy story of Gijs Bakker and Hella Jongerius. Famous designers seem to like him very much.

Last but not least, an interview with Olgar Zeebaars. A very interesting character, but not very chatty it seems...

EMMA Radio: The PRE-Milan Show, Monday 07-04-2014!

Do designers need Milan? - How graduates prepare for the show

In this first episode of EMMA in Milan, the reporters ask Luc van Hoeckel why he decided not to go to Milan. His project 'Single Spark'  was selected, but Luc explains why he thinks the project would fit better in a small fair targeted on NGO's or a likewise audience. Olle also discovers that Luc took some distance from his project...

And how does Jan Pieter Kaptein prepare for the Milan Design Week? "I never really felt the urge to go to Milan, so it's my first time. I printed 350 business cards."

Reporter Tom Loois recorded a Skype session with Dave Hakkens. As Dave says, school teachers were always more keen on the Precious Plastic project than on the Phone Bloks project. Now Phone Bloks is rising like a star. But Dave wonders how Phone Bloks speaks to the Milan audience, especially the manufacturers and industry partners. "Will Vitra be able to help me out on this one?"
