DAE alumna Cindy van den Bremen captures the international soccer fields with her Dutch Capsters! FIFA has decided to drop its 2007 ban on the hijab or headscarf last weekend. The ban was introduced because traditional headscarves were said to be dangerous: women could get caught up in them during the game.

Cindy van den Bremen convinced FIFA about the usefulness and safety of a headscarf. Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, a member of FIFA’s executive council, put forward a design from Dutch company Capsters to demonstrate that the headscarf needn’t be an impediment to the game.

‘Capsters’ is the final college project of DAE alumnus Cindy van den Bremen. With this product Cindy offered Muslim sportswomen an alternative to the traditional hijab or headscarf. Finally she made four designs for various sports and activities. There was immediate interest and she marketed them under the brand name Capsters. Cindy has won with Capsters a Good Design Award in Japan and a place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Due to the Capsters women have the choice to wear a headscarf. Finally there is freedom of choice, according to Cindy. This is a substantial progress in the emancipation of sports. Cindy van den Bremen says: “Right after graduation (1999) I started my own company CvdBremen Trend, Concept & Design in Eindhoven (the Netherlands). With my sports headwear designs I established the brand Capsters in 2001 and opened the webshop. Capsters became an official company in 2008, when I established the Capsters BV with business partner Karin Mastenbroek.”
