Our Catalogue of the 2016 Graduation Show - In Need Of… - has been selected as one of the 33 Best Dutch Book Designs of 2016 by the judge of the Foundation De Best Verzorgde Boeken.

Each year Dutch publishers, designers and printers submit around 300 books to be judged. This year there was a total of 298 submitted books and one of them was our Catalogue of the 2016 Graduation Show – ‘In Need of…’. This selection has also been sent to the international competition Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt in Leipzig and March 9 the winners will be announced.

This competition has the purpose to focus attention on and promote appreciation of book design and production in general. The Stichting says that it also hopes the competition will enhearten publishers of printed books to higher the priority of the design and technical production of their books and other publications.

The selected books are being exposed and exhibited at several places in the Netherlands and abroad, one of the places you can view the books is the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. On top of that the selection will be displayed in a bilingual catalogue, The Best Dutch Books Designs | De Best Verzorgde Boeken. In this catalogue the selected books will be presented in words, images and technical data. Each book will be reported separately.

The criteria by which the judges are tied to are kept to a minimum. All of the members of the panel have the ability to select books that are outstanding in their appearance, hereby it is important that there is a correlation between form and content. Each panel is free to develop its own vision, this year the focus was on the distinctiveness of the books in terms of content, design, image processing, typesetting, materials, printing and binding.

Every year the panel of judges will be appointed by the board of the Stichting and will consist of two graphic designers , an expert from the printing industry, an expert from the book-publishing sector and an expert in the field of graphic design or book design and production in general. This year the panel of judges consist of designers Yolanda Huntelaar and Remco van Bladel, Freek Kuin (creative director Robstolk printers), Eelco van Welie (CEO nai010 publishers) and Carolien Glazenburg (curator Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam).

The book, designed by Haller Brun, can still be ordered via https://www.ideabooks.nl/9789491400278-in-need-of-graduation-2016-design-academy-eindhoven.
