On Tuesday, May 9 at 17:00, Maarten Baas will give a lecture about his work at Design Academy Eindhoven.
Maarten Baas, also known as the Houdini of Dutch Design, is holding his first retrospective at The Groninger Museum. A Design Academy graduate of 2002, today he is DAE’s Master Contextual Design tutor. Hide & Seek brings together a great deal of the celebrated works by Maarten Baas and can be viewed until September 24, 2017.
From the moment he started, Maarten Baas was a success. For his DAE Graduation Project he designed the series Smoke. He burned classical furniture and then, in order to restore its functionality, covered it with a transparent layer of epoxy. In 2004, Maarten had his first solo show at Moss Gallery in New York, which was based on Smoke. For this exhibition he burned classics by Gaudi, Rietveld and many more, taking the statement of the Smoke series to more daring, even higher level than first warranted in the original, his graduation project.
Hide & Seek displays the iconic pieces of Smoke, Clay and Real Time as well as some new work, including a selection of critically acclaimed work launched in 2016: the Three Trunk Chair, Carapace and Close Parity.
The exhibition will also give an exclusive preview of Maarten Baas’ latest project called May I Have Your Attention Please, in which he collaborates with Lensvelt for Milan Design Week (April, 2017).
The exhibition can be viewed until September 24, 2017 in The Groninger Museum (Open Tuesday / Sunday from 10AM to 5PM).
