Rivers

Forests play a vital role in sustainable water management as they retain, filter and enrich water en route to a river. To visualise this intimate link between rivers and forests, Chizu Ogai created a series of seven wooden rulers. The rulers are like 3D maps representing the drainage area of seven different rivers in Western Europe. The length of each ruler is 1:1,000,000 of the actual length of the river, and the thickness illustrates the size of the related forest. Moreover, Ogai has used different types of wood in each Rivers ruler to indicate the distribution of tree species per forest.
