These clocks stand for the beating hearts of friends of Daan van der Zanden. Each clock has its own unique heartbeat, sound and mechanism; each was inspired by the character of a dear friend. Some of the clocks have an introverted tick, some a more extroverted and enthusiastic one. The clocks do not show the time, but only how it passes. When a clock’s reel has entirely unravelled, the clock stops. “I want to visualise death as the logical and, consequently, acceptable end of life,” says Van der Zanden. “Heartbeats celebrates life, but also embraces death as its natural end.”
