Design of Marriage
What: An installation illustrating the conflicting pressures women in South Korea face when it comes to marriage.
Why: The pressure is on from all sides. Jae Jang’s parents believe that her personal happiness hinges on marriage, while South Korean society
sees marriage as a way to preserve traditional values while also boosting the birth rate. Adding to the stress are modern feminists with their message that modern women must rebel against this restrictive bond and enjoy the single life.
How: With three walls showing three different video screens, Jae Jang illustrates how it feels to be a single South Korean woman trying to decide where she stands regarding marriage, while being surrounded by opposing perspectives.
“Why do we sustain marriage as an institution?”
