"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which." ― George Orwell, Animal Farm

In touch with the diminishing relationship between animals and humans while questioning our digital selves. We live in an era where our main interaction with the very beasts that form the basis of much of our nutrition and clothing is limited to Youtube. To create a reconnect from this disconnect, our Man and Communication students have designed a seriously playful interaction. But who’s playing who? Who’s acting more natural, and who gets to make the rules? This project investigates the boundary-shifts between (human) nature and technology resulting in an interactive experiment. It involves the effects of touch on people and animals, and the creation of awareness through touch with a special guest appearance by a pony, some chickens, a rooster, a few sheep, some goats, and a couple of bunnies.

Workshops

Fire and Food with designer Pieter Städler

Thursday 14th, Friday 15th, Saturday 16th at 12pm

Städler Made Brick Oven
Learn how to build your own pizza oven and make your own pizza in this one hour, free workshop with all supplies provided.

“Cooking in a fire is about reconnecting to our inner cave man,” says Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Pieter Städler.  “We lost the skill to prepare food like this about 80 years ago and the result is that we have become more isolated from food, its source and the realities of its preparations.  My work is about bringing people closer to nature and also closer to one another.”

Tactility and Emotions with Bori Kovacs

Friday 15th at 3.30pm

Come and explore the connection between touch and emotions, between how certain surfaces trigger an intangible reaction based on an association, or memory, and think about how nature can better influence our domestic environments.

“Often the surface qualities of our immediate homes are disregarded,” says graduate Bori Kovacs.  “We live in overly smooth and polished environments and yet humans have a desire to gather information through touch.  Why can’t man-made objects offer similarly stimulating experiences to nature?”

Film Programming

In our film programme, made by current and former students of Design Academy Eindhoven, we address the theme of tactility. From parodying tactile lust objects, to the speeding up of the material world while its digital counterpart is slowing us down, these films explore the value of the digital, the physical and the ‘in-between’.
