Professional design is operating in an expanding and increasingly complex field. A growing number of designers is looking for collaborations with other disciplines and expertise, where on the other hand we see that design languages, methods and tools are applied to different fields, for instance policy makers who are trying to involve users in designing public services. “Professional design, in particular design as practiced within the studio-based tradition of many art schools, is taking a new place on the world stage”, states design researcher Lucy Kimbell.
She specifically refers to the fact that design has been implemented in the managerial discourse. But do the practitioners from the different fields really speak the same language? What can designers bring to management thinking?
Lucy Kimbell will share her thoughts, followed by a reaction of Jan Boelen and a plenary debate.
Biographies:
Lucy Kimbell is head of the new social design practice at the young foundation and teacher on MBA elective on design and design management at Said Business School, University of Oxford. She is also an associate at the policy lab (Boston). She has a background in journalism, and worked for BBC World.
Jan Boelen is artistic director of Z33 in Hasselt and course director social design at Design Academy Eindhoven
