More and more people rediscover the beauty of 'old' materials. Working with your hands is trendy again: making your own clothes or furniture with recycled fabric or wood. On the other hand, artists are using technological developments. A bulletproof skin, unbreakable glass or invisible making textiles: nowadays it is possible. We see ourselves as masters of the material world, but are we masters? A sculptor makes a statue of marble – does the sculptor determine how the statue will look like or is it the marble that makes the image? The nature of materials is perhaps more important than we think.

In six readings scientists and artists will discuss materials as in craft, technology, and materials that are far from passive and indeed determine our lives.

On Monday November 5th Christien Meindertsma, Alumni Design Academy Eindhoven, will give a lecture called “From religious worship to a disposable culture”.
