11 June 2013
17.30 – 19.30 hours
Witte Dame Zaal 5th floor at DAE

Participation by: Eugenie de Lariviere, Jason Page, Alicia Ongay-Perez, prof. Timo de Rijk and Thomas Widdershoven
Moderated by: Gert Staal

The academic year has almost come to a close.
All around the building graduation projects are being installed and dismounted, examinations take place and students wait frantically for the outcomes of their finals. It seems the perfect moment for a debate on methods and purposes of design education at DAE and the results it generates.

Not only current and former students take part. Also two distinctive guests will enter the discussion. First, prof. Timo de Rijk, who is the author of a highly polemic article about the value of design education in Eindhoven. The article elaborated on the alleged flaws of the ‘Mine Kofun’ by designer Massoud Hassani, causing quite a stir in the Dutch design community. It was published in NRC Handelsblad just weeks before designer Thomas Widdershoven, our second guest this evening, was appointed Creative Director of DAE. Between them, some issues definitely need to be clarified.

Three presentations by students and former students will feed the debate.
Alicia Ongay-Perez graduated at the master department Contextual Design in 2012. She will present part of her graduation project and explain how this project is linked to the school’s DNA.
Master student Eugenie de Lariviere has analysed the discussion that was triggered by prof. De Rijk’s article as part of a larger graduation project on design education. She will demonstrate the arguments exchanged in this debate.
And finally bachelor student Jason Page picked the best qualities of the past graduation projects, prize winners, Milan show students and mashed them into possible ‘Success Profiles’.
