Veenhuizen is a small village in the province of Drenthe, one of many. But Veenhuizen has a special story to tell: the former penal colony contains more than 100 monumental buildings. Veenhuizen is even on the cultural heritage list. Because Veenhuizen is also surrounded by nature, it attracts lots of tourists. Part of the buildings are still being used as a detention house. In short: a very interesting area for all Dutch culture lovers and ... design students!

Design Academy Eindhoven, the penitentiary of Veenhuizen, the municipality of Noordenveld and the province of Drenthe have started a collaboration to eventually realize ‘Collection Veenhuizen’: a series of unique collection of products and services that can only be produced and sold in Veenhuizen. The collaboration is called Design Deal Veenhuizen and is a 3-year plan.

DAE students have started to work in Veenhuizen since May, to apply their ideas and designs on Veenhuizen, its inhabitants (among others the detainees) and its surroundings. This weekend, their work is being presented in Kazerne Bouw & Bind in Veenhuizen.

Students Lucie Majerus and Michèle Degen came up with a special mobile stall to sell ‘Veenhuizen Peat-Cookies’. The mobile stall functions at the same time as collecting baskets (to pick local fruit and grains to make the cookies) and a worktable where tourists for example can actually make their own cookies themselves.

To see this project and many more, come and visit the expo in Veenhuizen!
