Next tuesday 23 September at 6.20 PM the NTR is broadcasting the first instalment of ‘Klokhuis zoekt ontwerpers’ on NPO3. This first episode features Dirk van der Kooij! On the same day, the website dedicated to Klokhuis’ design content is going online: www.hetklokhuis.nl. The website design was made by our Man and Communication students Eelke Eugelink and Valéry Overhoff.

Design Academy Eindhoven, DDW, Gemeente Eindhoven and De Ontdekfabriek are partners in the NTR design contest ‘Het Klokhuis zoekt ontwerpers’ (Het Klokhuis is seeking designers). Five Klokhuis episodes on design to inspire children to design objects for a Klokhuis Design Dinner, which will go on display during DDW 2015. Each episode focuses on a different aspect of the dinner. Based on the idea ‘Gather around the table’ young viewers are encouraged to reconsider a chair, a table, light, cutlery and tableware. Each of the 5 episodes features a young designer who is a graduate from Design Academy Eindhoven. In the first episode, which will air at 6.20 PM on 23 September on NPO3, Dirk van der Kooij tells us how he got the idea to turn scrapped refrigerators into a chair.

An overview of the episodes:

Tuesday 23 September, Design Chair

The chair is one of the first pieces of furniture people began to think about. Nienke presents the history of the chair and ends up with the contemporary designer Dirk van der Kooij. With a 3D printer which he made himself, he has found a way to turn the 40 million fridges we throw out into a series of magnificent chairs. His designs have won awards and have been on display at museums.

Tuesday 30 September, Design Tableware

From the late Middle Ages right up to today people have always thought about ways to improve our tableware. Nienke outlines a brief history and meets two young designers who are now working on ways to further develop our tableware. Inge Kuipers has designed a very special teapot that can be used by people who have arthritis, and Lisa Kooijman has designed a plate that helps you monitor your eating habits.

Tuesday 07 October, Design Light

The sun used to be our lamp. But ever since the invention of light we can manipulate the 24-hour cycle. The latest invention that helps us do this is the LED-light. Lighting designer Dennis Parren uses it to create the most fantastic lamps. Light researcher Toine Schoutens explains how you can influence your biorhythm using coloured light. With this trick he helped DJ Chiel Beelen set the world record for making radio.

Tuesday 21 October, Design  Cutlery

The first ‘knives’ were made of stone, more than 6,000 years ago. Nienke tells us how cutlery has evolved since then and became the set as we know it today. Designers Mickael Boulay and Anne Ligtenberg create cutlery for people who have trouble using traditional knives, forks and spoons. An ‘improvement set’ for people whose motor skills are problematic, and a set for slow eaters.

Tuesday 28 October, Design Table

Tables are often a central places where people come together. Bart explains that the look and shape of a table often say something about its users. Designer Jorre van Ast prefers to make his environmentally friendly tables from wood he harvests from his own forest. Tineke Beunders has designed a game-of-marbles table so you will never get bored.

Workshop at De Ontdekfabriek during DDW

During Dutch Design Week, from 18-23 October, young designers can attend a series of workshops. In collaboration with de Ontdekfabriek, Klokhuis organises workshops in Eindhoven called ‘Gather around the table’. An inspiring place where children are encouraged to shape their own world. Applications for these workshops through www.hetklokhuis.nl

Study packet

From Tuesday 23 September an exciting study packet can be downloaded from www.hetklokhuis.nl for schools that wish to participate. Who has the best idea for the Klokhuis Design Dinner?
