We are happy to announce the fifth event of the DAE Lecture Series of 2019! This Thursday we are welcoming Dan Hill (designer, urbanist, Director of Strategic Design at Vinnova, visiting prof at UCL Bartlett IIPP and Adjunct prof at RMIT) to speak with us.
Dan Hill’s book ‘Dark Matter and Trojan Horses’ first published in 2012 at Strelka Press. It has now established itself as a classic amongst designers and educators. Applying the field of strategic design, Hill calls for going beyond the evident problem-solution schematic and engaging with the messy context that surrounds it. A premise that is both empowering to the profession, as much as it is murky.
Thursday night, we will enjoy a presentation of Dan Hill’s current work. Followed by a Q&A session set out by the chapters in the book. We will tackle all topics and questions, ranging from ‘What is the problem with design thinking?’ to ‘What is the point?. Avid readers will gain extra insight and the rest of us will receive a compelling summary of the book. Together we will evaluate how ‘Dark Matter and Trojan Horses’ has stood the test of time.
Devoted to the intersection between design, cities, and technology, Dan Hill has led companies and institutions (amongst them the city of Eindhoven) into a resilient future. Most notably, he was CEO for Fabrica, the Italian communications research center and design studio, as well as for Arup, Monocle, and the BBC. Since 2001 Hill has blogged regularly on ‘City of Sound’ and currently on ‘Medium’. A link to one of his recent publications titled: ‘A Cloud Atlas for Eindhoven, and believing in society over unicorns’ can be found below.
