2012 Grand Summer Exhibition
april 26th 2012 till september 30th 2012

In the summer of 2012, Oranienbaum Palace will be hosting an exhibition of contemporary Dutch Design and fashion in combination with historical artefacts from the Dutch Royal Archives. Built for Henriette Catharina, Princess of Anhalt-Dessau, Oranienbaum is part of the heritage of the House of Orange-Nassau. With a major conservation and refurbishment process nearing completion, the palace and its park have been restored to their former grandeur.

The exhibition features work by prominent Dutch designers like Viktor & Rolf, Gijs Bakker, Hella Jongerius, Spijkers & Spijkers, Marcel Wanders, Jan Taminiau, Iris van Herpen, Scholten & Baijings and Piet Hein Eek. However, young up-and-coming talent is also in evidence.

Many of the Dutch designers featured here have embraced traditional techniques and materials. By experimenting with tradition and innovation they have breathed new life into the nation’s cultural heritage. This playful originality is one of the unmistakeable hallmarks of Dutch design.

Dutch design is internationally acclaimed as a global brand. Design icons like Gijs Bakker, Hella Jongerius, Jurgen Bey and Marcel Wanders will be displaying some of their most characteristic works at the Oranienbaum summer exhibition. Each of the unique handmade artefacts has its own story to tell. In combination with objets d’art from the Royal Archives, many of them directly reflect the original function of the rooms where they are exhibited.

The exhibition covers some 50 rooms. Each one is a showcase for ceramics, glassware and glass objects, silver and furniture, from the tea salon to the dressing-room of the mistress of the house, from the former princely apartments to the basement with its Delft blue tiles, from the bedchamber to the entrance hall. Visitors are invited to explore the Palace and admire the beauty of the Dutch design scene.
