BAS RAIJMAKERS FOLLOWED THE MILAN BREAKFAST DEBATE, OPEN DESIGN. HE MADE A REPORT BASED ON QUOTES OF THIS MORNING DEBATE SESSION OF DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN. READ HIS OPINION & THOUGHTS IN THE FOLLOWING TEXT.
(Bas Raijmakers Creative director at STBY London and Amsterdam)

'’ Breakfast discussion at Design Academy Eindhoven in Milano at #Salone: sandwiches with cheese and apple syrup to stir up the debate!”

“Talking about Open Design: Paul Atkinson says designers and consumers will be co-creating products. Is this not more relevant for services?”

“Leadbetter: we-think and open source was already successful at time of steam engine innovation in Cornwall, sharing improvements via mags.”

“Would be nice to bring this Open Source avant-la-lettre of the steam engine into Heartlands project in Cornwall we work on at STBY.”

“Atkinson presents Open Design as a return to pre-industrial control over creativity and production for the consumer. But something changed.”

“..I think what changed is that we now are all connected and that we must be much more aware of the impact of our choices: sustainability!”

“It is surprising, going around the #Salone, that clarity about resources needed to make all these things is absent. Is no one interested?”

“Is the design industry the next Internet 'victim' after the music & film industry? We are thinking hard here to jump out of that scenario.”

“Joost Grootens: suggests that designers in this Open Source era should design their own tools.
And then perhaps distribute them I might add?”

“Some Open Design experiments at #Salone in publicdesignfestival.com, food for thought for the discussion here at Design Academy Eindhoven.”

“Finally, at the end of the debate, we conclude that designers should move from being authors to engaging in conversations on the Internet.”
