OCE SUPERMAKER AT DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN

Design Research for elevated printing

Researchers and students of Design Academy in Eindhoven explored the possibilities of the elevated printing technology in collaboration with specialists of Océ-Technologies – A Canon Company. Their breathtaking results will be presented at the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven (18 - 24 October).

What applications can be made using the brand new elevated printing technology? To answer that question Oce invited the research group at Design Academy to conduct design research as part of the Creative Industry Research Program (CRISP) (2) they both participate in. The results will be presented at the Dutch Design Week, starting October 18, on the 4rd floor (Research & Reporting Studio) of Design Academy Eindhoven. It is named Supermaker, to highlight the vision that elevated printing (on construction materials) may be the start of a radical new way of interior design.

Last half year, design researchers Karianne Rygh and Cynthia Hathaway and Océ expert Clemens Weijkamp developed a set of samples that showed the capabilities in an expressive way. Subsequently, they shared these samples with renowned designers and architects such as Marcel Wanders Studio or Next architects.

In September, 12 design students of Design Academy Eindhoven were asked to explore elevated printing as well. Their final results were presented recently at Océ, to a panel of experts who were stunned by the results; the students showed not only that are capable to think outside the box, but also came up with sound tangible samples and prototypes. Some ideas were aesthetical, such as almost holographic images whereby the image changes when one moves around it, drawing the attention of anyone around. Some ideas showed the potential for business no one at Océ considered before, such as jewelry or using elevated prints as a mold for thin walled porcelain.

The exhibition is shown in the Research & Reporting studio of Design Academy Eindhoven were the research group of Design Academy Eindhoven also will set up daily conversations on design research. On Tuesday 22nd of October they will discuss the topic of design for business innovation with Merijn Neeleman, head of design printing company Océ Canon Company, Giulia Calabretta (Delft University of Technology), Karianne Rygh, researcher at Design Academy Eindhoven and Bas Raijmakers & Danielle Arets (Readership Design Academy Eindhoven).
