Technology is becoming a major part of everyday life; an enabler to stay connected with people and machine alike. In this, technology has rooted in most parts of business and leisure – the scientific fields, entrepreneurship, education, product development, design and gaming. The first-ever Dutch edition of Campus Party emphasizes these opportunities and celebrates the innovations with technology festival for students, creatives, entrepreneurs, gadget lovers and tech fanatics.

Although Design Academy Eindhoven is not a technical school necessarily, the use of technology in design is increasing each year. It can be seen in the graduation projects and current schoolwork, representing the urge of students to involve more technology and science in the field of design. The overlap of technology and design, in for example 3D printing, virtual reality and robotics shows how design can balance technology, and how design-thinking can further develop technology.

This overlap initiated the participation of Design Academy Eindhoven to the first Dutch edition of Campus Party. In addition to the lineup of the technology festival (keynote speakers, workshops, a drone race and a hackathon, to name a few), Design Academy Eindhoven will encourage forward thinking in technology. Presenting work of current students from different Bachelor design departments and inviting the public to join DAE tutor and designer Eibert Draisma with two workshops: “OMG it’s a Knipperfrotje!” and “Pop-Pop Boats”.

“OMG it’s a Knipperfrotje” elevates a very basic electronic circuit with ten LED lights into a mesmerizing mini campfire. The Knipperfrotje shows how electronic items can hold value and sustainability by simply reinventing the use of the materials used – a recycled glass jar, a few LED lights and a simplified motherboard. “Pop-Pop Boat” is a simple concept with great results. Using only an empty milk carton and a tea light, participants are invited to use basic science and endless creativity to build a pop-up boat.

Students will elaborate on the use of technology in their projects, and visitors are invited to join the daily workshops. Curious to visit Campus Party this spring? Tickets are available online via the Campus Party website.
